The Jolly Fisherman has been a feature of this fishing village since 1847, but a refurbishment this year made more of its stunning coastal location, creating spectacular vistas through bigger restaurant windows as well as an outdoor terrace. There are open fires for stormy days, stone-flagged floors, low-beamed ceilings, battered leather sofas – but nothing is twee or ostentatious: think Farrow & Ball colours and muted herringbone upholstery. We adored this pub – in all its tattiness – on a visit on a rainy day last September, when a cosy snug and roaring fire was blissful, but really, we love this shinier mantle even more. |
