Winston Churchill was the last imperialist. His 90-year lifespan exactly mirrored the British Empire’s zenith, decline and fall. Born in 1874, when the global map was still proudly splashed red, he saw imperialism in action as a young cavalry subaltern in the Indian Raj; took part in a punitive expedition into Afghanistan; rode in the British Army’s last great cavalry charge at Omdurman in Sudan; witnessed the Boer War in South Africa as a journalist and POW; and finally lamented and tried to delay the Empire’s long sunset as a politician. The end of his career in the Fifties coincided with the last imperial real estate being handed back to those who lived there. |
