After Myanmar's reformist government took power,the United States scrapped or suspended almost all economic andpolitical sanctions - but not the ban on jade and rubies. It wasrenewed by the White House on Aug. 7 in a sign that Myanmar'sanarchic jade industry remains a throwback to an era ofdictatorship. The U.S. Department of the Treasury included theindustry in activities that "contribute to human rights abusesor undermine Burma's democratic reform process." |
